What Is a Smash Burger? Single vs Double Patty, Explained

What is a smash burger? It is a beef burger made by pressing a ball of beef thin on a very hot griddle, instead of cooking a thick, pre-shaped patty. The thin patty browns all over, so the edges caramelise and crisp while the middle stays juicy. That crust is where the flavour is, and it is why a smash burger tastes beefier than a thick one. Why smashing makes a better burger
Beef browns when it touches hot metal. A thick patty only touches the griddle on two flat sides, so most of it steams inside. A smashed patty is pressed flat the moment it lands, so far more of it touches the griddle and gets a hard sear. You get crisp, lacy edges, a deep brown crust and a juicy centre, all in a patty that cooks in minutes.

Single patty or double patty?
A single patty smash burger keeps the beef, cheese and sauces in balance. Our signature is Chipy's Original Beef: one smashed patty with cheese, pickles, mayo mustard and BBQ sauce in a brioche bun. The Mushroom Madness, Fiery Jalapeño Beef and Beef N' Pepperoni are single patty smash burgers too.
A double patty smash burger doubles the crust. The Monster Beef stacks two smashed patties with cheese, pickles, jalapeños, BBQ and mayo. The Mushroom Majesty puts two patties and creamy mushroom sauce in a toasted bun, and the Beefy Inferno is one of the hottest burgers on our menu. Cheese, toasted bun and sauce: mild or spicy
Every Chipy smash burger comes with cheese. The bun is a soft brioche on most, and the Mushroom Majesty uses a toasted bun that holds up to its creamy sauce.
For a smash beef burger with mild sauce, choose Chipy's Original Beef (mayo mustard and BBQ) or the Mushroom Madness (sautéed mushrooms and ranch). Neither has any chilli. For a smash beef burger with spicy sauce, the Fiery Jalapeño Beef brings jalapeños and Hulk sauce, and the Beefy Inferno brings chilli sauce. Want pepperoni?
